In September of 2017, the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) and the International Consortium for Health and Wellness Coaches (ICHWC) administered the first ever National Board Certification of Health & Wellness Coaches (NBC-HWC) exam. This emerging, board-certified profession has the potential to generate improved patient outcomes, especially in the areas of chronic illness prevention and management, as well as lowered health care costs for payers and employers.
